It explains why eastern areas of Ukraine contain Russian speakers. Not because they were always there but because Stalin starved all the Ukrainians and they died and were replaced with Russians.

Around 1000 AD the Principality of Kiev included Moscow and Velikiy Novgorod, and “Russia” started in Kiev; it could be argued that Russia was a colony of Ukraine at the time!

Thanks for this essay. I linked to it through The Browser. I learned a lot from it and it was a pleasure to read. It led me to subscribe. The Ukraine situation is tragic, and the least one can do is read and learn more. Thanks for enabling that.
